Re: Auto Aero TCS? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Auto Aero TCS?, Keith ![]() |
I wouldn't sweat the TCS unless it start becomming a major problem. Most of the time the TCS doesn't give you any trouble unless you like smoking tires. Some cars have occasional TCS problems, just like any car will have problems. A few cars have chronic TCS problems, just like a few cars have problems that just never seem to be fixed. For those few problems, swapping out the throttle body is a fix. But it just isn't something to worry about until it happens, and happens a lot.
As to the automatic, it is a weak spot in the 9000. In general, they last 80-120K miles. But folks have had them run over 200K with no problem. Change fluid every 15-20K, and most importantly, KEEP AN EYE ON IT. A lot of the autobox problems start small, and left alone, grow big. It's common for one or more of the assist springs in the valve body to break or weaken. No big deal to change, the valve body can be pulled out in about 20 minutes with the tranny in the car. But the broken spring leads to harsh shifts, and left alone, those harsh shifts start chewing up clutches. Pretty soon a $10 spring has caused a tranny rebuild. The car shifting at the wrong times, like starting up in 2nd, or shifting way early is usually due to leaky govenor seals. The seals can be changed easily with the transmission in the car. So if the transmission is shifting smoothly, no slipping or harsh shifts, then assume it will be fine and keep an eye on it. If you see problems, check out the valve body springs. And the absolute worst case is a new tranny. You can get a high-quality rebuilt from Eriksson for about $1800 delivered, and drop it in yourself.
$3800 for an Aero with 77K sounds like a very good deal. You can always have the turbo rebuilt, or swap in a different one like zeke says. Even if the tranny dies in a couple of years and you put in a rebuilt, you'll have 5-10 years of a REALLY nice car for about $6K, which is two year's depreciation on a new VW.
