The DI requires EXACTLY the right spark plug designed for it. The DI was designed around NGK's. Lately, Bosch has come out with a spark plug designed to work with the Saab DI. I've used them, but still prefer the NGK's.
I think I can say conclusively that your local parts guy has not been in touch with Saab Technical Services concerning spark plug applications. He's looking in some book, where chances are the criteria for spark plug interchangeability is if the hole is the same size, and hopefully the same thread.
If you are having possible ignition problems, it makes no sense to go cheap on the spark plugs. Get the exact NGK plugs stated in the manual. Gap them to the number stated in the manual. Don't assume they come properly gapped from the factory. If you are still having engine problems, then at least you know it isn't the plugs. If you put in a set of Delco Ultra Belch-fires and the car is running badly, how do you know it isn't the plugs?
Use the manual that came with your car. Check the decal in the engine compartment.
