The DI uses the spark plug as a sensor for conditions inside the combustion chamber. Actual resistance, dialectric qualities of the insulator, and a host of other plug characteristics contribute to how the DI senses through the plug. Saab worked with NGK to control those characteristics. Another company's plug may not be spec'ed for those characteristics.
I know for a fact that using the wrong plug will cause the Check Engine light to come on. There have been some reports, and I don't know how accurate, that using the wrong plug can speed the demise of a DI cassette.
I'd have to check my literature to come up with the complete set of functions the DI uses the plugs for. In addition to sparking, that is.
