If you're running the stock ignition system (hall effect in your case), you can't go TOO wide before your coil won't be able to put out enough voltage to bridge the gap under extreme conditions (high boost). I'm also not sure what the limit is with the stock system. I always just used 0.025", never had a problem that wasn't related to simply worn cap and rotor or plug wires.
However, I do have a Jacobs ignition in my car now. I am currently running a gap of 0.050" (1.27 mm), and will likely increase that further. The car's running great, and for best mileage, Jacobs says to keep increasing the gap until you notice a decrease in the smoothness of the engine, then close the gap up a little. They do say to not go above a 0.070" (1.78 mm) gap, though. Thus far, I'm a way off their claims of 15% mileage increase, more like about 9% right now. But, the mileage does seem to be getting better as I increase the gap..
It would seem the key to having such a large gap, is to have an ignition system capable of supplying the necessary voltage and current to create a spark across the gap.
