As Andrew says, most probably the voltage regulator - really, just the brushes, which are built into the voltage regulator. On occasion a diode blows in the block, but since you're getting apparently little or no charge, I'd assume a bad regulator.
The regulator can be replaced with the alternator in the car - either from above, with thin arms, or by reaching through the hole in the fender inner liner where the driveshaft comes through (jack and support car, remove tire). EIther way, remove the battery ground cable first for safety. If you can't get the regulator out that way, you need to remove the fender inner liner and pull the alternator.
Of course, making a good visual inspection helps - a bad alternator ground, problem with the thin excitation cable, or the battery cable connection to the alternator can all cause problems.
Alternators are rebuildable, but for the time and effort involved, it's probably best just to buy a rebuilt unit with a guarantee. They're available (so I've heard) in the $100 range from places like Pep Boys and AutoZone. I Would Not buy one from a dealer.
Good luck!
