Re: $4.00 to smooth out idle Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: $4.00 to smooth out idle, adam ![]() |
Just a couple of comments-
Normally the intake creates a small vacuum for the crankcase to pull out oil and gas fumes. The poor idle with the crankcase line connected implies that there was a decent air flow out of the crank into the throttle body, which is unmetered air. Two possible reasons - either you have a vacuum leak into the crank (valve cover leak, bad seal at the oil filler cap, etc.), or significant blow-by from the rings. Either way, something to check. Under normal conditions with a good running engine, little or no air (and fumes) are pulled into the intake.
Also, and this is from memory, and I don't know what year your car is, but in some years the breather line to the throttle body is shared with another large hose - could that be the source of the vacuum leak, and by plugging the line to the throttle, you're just ignoring it?
One last bit - if your state has stringent emissions testing, you may be caught short. If they inspect the engine (as they do in some states), a crankcase breather is strictly a No No, as it is both an active and evaporative source of pollutants.
Engines can idle just fine with the crankcase ventilation connected. It might be a good idea to look just a little further to see if you can find the real cause.
