When you crank the engine, does the tachometer needle bounce, or just sit there? If it bounces, then the ignition hall effect pickup and ignition amplifier are OK. No bounce, then the ignition amplifier is suspect.
My first thought - how much gas do you have in the tank, and how cold is it outside? If you've been running with low fuel levels, that's a lot of space to condense moisture, and if it's below freezing, you could have an ice blockage in the fuel line. Drop a can of gas line anti-freeze in the tank and give it an hour to work. Also, is the tank less than half full? If so, you might be having a problem with the helper fuel pump. If the helper pump locks up, you don't pump fuel with less than half a tank.
After cranking the engine, pull a spark plug. If it's wet with fuel, then you know you've got fuel. Put the lead on the end of the spark plug, and hold the base of the plug against chassis while someone cranks the engine a few times. You want to see it spark (note- you're trying to make the spark jump the plug, not from the plug to chassis, also, you can do this with your conventional ignition '87, but DON'T do this with a DI system)
Good luck!
