I used to have an '85 325. Can't speak for the E36 cars (or E46!) but my 9kt was substantially easier to work on in every respect. My biggest complaint about the BMW was the way the interior fit together - tons of small pieces and oddly located screws and retainers. Didn't lend itself to coming apart. The engine is nicely laid out, but that big inline six barely fits in the bay, and it's pretty crowded. I disliked changing timing belts, I disliked a viscous-coupled cooling fan, and I disliked the horizontally mounted oil filter under the A/C compressor.
The car was fun to drive, but in the end not worth the trouble. I sold it, and haven't missed it... Sign me up for an E30 M3 or an E46 M3, but IMHO the three series went downhill since they killed off the E21 323i.
