I had a '91 9000 automatic, and the original transmission was still going strong when I traded the car in at 118,000 miles.
On the other hand, the car I traded the '91 in on, a '96 9000 CS with automatic and 18,000 miles, had to have the autobox rebuilt at only 37,000 miles (last fall). Luckily, since the car had just come off warranty for time (4 years), my SAAB dealer did the repair as a "good will" repair, and I only had to pay $150 for what would normally be a $2500 to $3000 repair. My '96 had been well maintained and seemingly well cared for, but maybe the previous owner had abused the autobox somehow.
I guess my point is that these 9000 ZF auto transmissions seem to be somewhat inconsistent - some need repairs relatively soon, others can last over 100,000 miles. I have heard that the best insurance for long life of these boxes is frequent transmission fluid changes, so it's important to be able to see service records before you buy a used 9000.
