I'd also say the plugs are a likely cause of the problem. I was fiddling around with my gap not long ago, trying to find the optimum gap setting for my performance ignition. When I got too large, it was very easy to tell. Things were fine until about 2/3 of the way through yellow on the boost gauge, after that, was getting some pretty big cutouts.
However, I just put a modified APC on my car, and hit the overboost cutoff for the first time ever, a few days ago. BIG difference! While I was heading up a mountain pass in 5th, so not a huge amount of acceleration to throw me against the seat belts, it nontheless was a very different feeling from a spark plug problem. Much more abrubt and hard, almost like something just broke. Kinda scary.
Needless to say, I soon after adjusted my overboost cutoff switch to a higher value.
