Used turbo shaft play

I was inspecting a used turbocharger from an '88 9000 and the shaft, when inspected from the intake side, seemed to have a little play in it. I know the turbo worked fine before the engine was removed from the car and there are no oil leaks and it did not smoke. Does anyone know if this type of play is normal or does it indicate excessive wear? The turbo only had approx. 30k miles on it before tbe car was wrecked.
Thanks, Chris
