As aero guy says, end play should be nil (much less than 1 mm I would think - practically zero). Sideways play is another thing though. They can have quite a bit of side-to-side play and still be fine. The reason is that the "bearing" is actually a floating bushing. It's a brass bushing with a few holes drilled radially (like from the side of a doughnut into the hole in the center). The bushing then sits in a cavity that allows oil to flow around the outside of the bearing and enter by way of the holes. My understanding is that the bushing is actually free to spin somewhat. So there can be a fair amount of side play just from the bushing moving side-to-side in its cavity. I've decided that side play is not a valid indicator of turbo condition, because you won't be able to distinguish bushing wear over normal side-play. No end play allowed though.
