Hard to Believe That Oil Drain Plug Calls For Only 18 Ft. Lbs.

THANKS for all the suggestions on the stripped oil drain plug ('94). I hadn't previously given much thought to 12- vs. 6-sided sockets, but I guess now I know better. I just tried a 6-sided 13 mm socket, and wound up rounding the bolt head even more. Next I will try a Metrinch socket. If that fails, it's indyshop/ViseGrip time. I saw the Clench Wrench tool at Sears; interesting tool, but the longest handle seemed too short.
According to the Saab user manual, the plug should be tightened to 18 ± 3 ft.lbs. Assuming a lever arm of one foot, I pressed my hand on a bathroom scale to see how much 20 lbs. feels like. It doesn't feel like much! In particular, it doesn't feel like it would be enough to adequately seal the metal-to-metal gaps in that copper washer. If that washer had been a softer material like teflon (like it is in my Ford), I suspect that I wouldn't feel like I had to tighten that plug beyond a wimpy 18 ft.lbs.
Is it just me, or does most everyone else habitually overtighten because they are going by how much they think is needed to seal---to create sealing gouges in---that copper seal?
