change there is a reason for that. Copper in the annealed state is quite malleable but after repeated heat cycles the copper becomes harder with age and compression, less readily able to compress and seal the next time used. 18 ft-lbs is quite a lot consideing the cross point distance applied forces and screw pitch it is quite easy to reach over 40,000 pounds of induced preload on this bolt head. The bolt is long and the soft washer allows some "cushion". If bolt heads are stripping it is pretty obvious one of two things is going on,or both. 1. the improper size and type tool is being used or 2. far too much torque is being applied. I personally do not trust myself to guestimate 18 ft-lbs of torque so I use a torque wrench every time I tighten a bolt/nut. After over 50 years I can get close but my ability in the morning after my Wheaties is far different in the afternoon after "screwing" around all day. Think about it.
