What you're getting is a leak, just a very small one. Most leaks start small. By the time you'd actually see liquid dripping on the floor, you'll smell coolant all the time very strongly, and probably also get fogging on the inside of the window. But the corrosion process is constant (rust never sleeps), so chances are good it'll only get worse unadressed.
If you address it now, you should be able hold off replacing the core for a long time, perhaps the life of the car. I don't know about the filament types. Bars leaks has helped me in cars where I just started to detect a smell, and it cleared it up. (not instantly- give it a few weeks.) Unless the filaments are *very* small, I don't think it would help with the minute pinhole leak you've got now.
