I replaced mine last summer when it developed the same symptoms, also only when the car was hot (inside - not necessarily in the engine compartment). The switch is only $50, and MUCH easier to replace than the starter.
The hall effect pickup inside the distributor is a possibility, but the failure mode on mine was that it would suddenly die while I was driving, and then fail to restart for hours, not minutes.
The key to telling whether or not it's an ignition (cap, rotor, distributor, coil, ignition amplifier module) problem vs just the switch, is what the tach does when you are cranking the engine. If the tachometer needle bounces, your distributor and hall effect pickup, as well as ignition amplifier module are likely ok, and they are the two most likely components when a no spark condition is present.
Oops but nevermind, you said it did not even crank! In that case, definitely look to the switch, the ignition system has no involvment until the starter gets going!
One final note. If you turn the key at a time when the engine will not crank, do it with the hood and drivers window/door open. If you hear a click from the engine compartment when you turn the key, it's likely that the solenoid on the starter is bad. If no click, almost certainly the switch!
Good luck!
