Automatic tranny nudging Posted by Thomas [Email] ![]() ![]() |
7 months ago I bought a -88 9kT CD, and brought it from Germany to Norway. A Norwegian buying a Swedish car form Germany, that seems an odd thing to do you may think, but these cars are very popular in Norway and the prices are high. Germany has a huge stock of used cars and functions as a car-pool for especially Norway (MB, BMW), but also for Sweden when it comes to Saab 9kT top of the line models . Anyway, my car has a very low milage, with all extras, automatic transmission included, the last item is the cause of a few questions to the wisdom of this board. I am aware of the warnings when it comes to Saab 9k and the relatively shortlifed ZF tranny and I have read numerous postings regarding this subject. I am unfamiliar with automatic trannies, but I enjoy to drive my Saab, and I want to keep it in top condition the next years.
1) The car moves slightly forward when idling in D-posititon, (reverses in R). Is this movement normal? Are there any adjustments to be done to get the car stand still when idling in D? The idle RPM is about 850 in N, 950 in D.
2) The gearshifts are smooth upwards and downwards, but when I releave the throttle pressure, the shifts occasionally nudges between 3rd and 4th. I think that these nudges can cause damage to the tranny in the long run.
Are there any adjustmenst to do to overcome this? There is a small damper mounted on the throttle/kick-down cable lever to smoothen the motion back to idle. This damper functions poorly. Could this be the cause of the nudging?
3) The Townsend site (great!) describes a procedure called band adjustment, it seems pretty strait forward, have any of you any experience with this?
Thank you!
Thomas
