Captain,
Sounds like "no name" is right - I suspect it's the master cylinder
attached to the pedal. Are you on a highway? If so, then it is
possible to drive without the clutch. In fact, I've even done it
in the city, but the wear on the starter can be a bit much. This is
what you do: put it in 1st and start the vehicle. Once you're under
way and have climbed to where you want to shift, lift your foot off the
gas, pull the gear lever out of first, and wait an instant while the
rev's drop. You should be able to pull it into 2nd without any grinding
IF you haven't let the rev's drop too much. Use the same technique all
the way up to 5th and you should be able to get yourself a little closer
to repair help. When going down thru the gears, after you take it out of,
say 4th, bring the rev's up until you can push it into 3rd. After a few
tries you should be pretty proficient, ie. no grinding, at getting clean
downshifts. If you have to stop, just put it in neutral, brake, and once
stopped, turn the engine off. You can put it in 1st and start all over
again.
