I've also got an '87 9000T, now at 252k miles. I've put WAY more money into it than it sounds as if you have, and I still am keeping it. In fact, I've now put more into repairs than I paid for the car just over five years ago. But Ari is totally right, if you buy a newer used car, it will still need repairs, and you won't be nearly as certain about it's repair history in most cases, or how it was {mis}treated. And new is rarely an option when it comes to saving money, unless you are willing to severely compromise safety, comfort, room, practicality, performance, or all of the above.
You can often buy a new 9k or any newer Saab, at a considerable, sometimes unbelievable, discount on a car only 3-5 years old. However, it will still be enough money such that you could have made repairs on your existing '87 9k for at least four or five years, maybe even double that. At which point, you several year old newer Saab will be needing similar repairs..
Well, I don't want to just regurgitate what Ari said. :) As he points out, the reasons for getting a new car are really psychological, not economic. I say, if you love the car you have, as I do mine, keep it!
If you hate your car, or don't trust it, get rid of it, at any age or condition.
