Ari, I read your posting with interest. My '89 9k recently began showing flakey headlight performance; started with headlights going out intermittently. They'd usually come back on by themselves. I tried using headlight switch to revive them, but no change. Then I tried flicking high beam stalk switch and that worked. Until recently when that stopped working.
I checked the relays; I've got a square one and a larger rectangular one. On the larger one, I noticed one of its contacts looking ill, and the bakelite on the socket had evidence of heat distortion.
You say that the relay case is held by tabs. Mine have no tabs; there's some kind of clear sealant around the pins, and the case seems to be sealed by that. Do you think I can still take it apart to resolder the problem pin?
