As much as I love my '87 9kT there's just "no replacement for displacement" as people say. A big V-8 just has a wonderful feel of torque all over the power band. Taking off from a stop is effortless and shifting is all but needless in normal driving. As you've found, it's addictive! I had a '77 Firebird with a 400ci (6.6l) and 4-speed before my 9k. It's a great feeling to have raw power, rear wheel drive, and a bullet proof tranny. But I also like how my Saab is quite quick in its own right, gets double the fuel economy, carries four times the stuff and is full of luxury items. Now I've found a new addiction: turbo rush.
I think with respect to handling your best bet are the nicest tires you can afford and a good set of shocks. Many like Blisteins. It will never feel like the 'bird, but diferent certainly doesn't mean worse in this case.
