Ah, I thought that might draw some ire...

My point wasn’t to criticize Saabs in any way or directly compare performance, just that there is a certain pleasure in driving a a car with a big V8. Effortless power at all engine speeds, smoky burnouts on command and a sense of sturdiness (though perhaps not longevity) that comes with seriously beefy components. With my Firebird I could smoke the tires across and intersection and slam-shift into 2nd without flinching and then cruise around at 20mph in top gear without shifting. Sure, I couldn’t carry much cargo, it sometimes got single digit fuel economy, and it eventually got retired due to a rod knock, but there was a clear pleasure to driving it. That said, there’s obviously a reason why I drive a Saab, and it ain’t because I think American cars are better. Saabs accomplish their performance in a much more sophisticated and efficient manner, at the sacrifice of some of the things that make a big engine nice to drive. Of course there are many benefits to this approach too as you well know. h, and I’ve got you beat. My ‘87 has 245k and is still going strong :)
Keep Saabing,
Craig
