I agree completely with driving style.
Losing your brakes in the mountains would definitely cause some sweaty palms on my part. Any idea what the cause was, just offhand I'm thinking the brake fliud boiled.
I got 60k miles on my first set of stock pads. That was with three 2 day drivers schools at the track. I would still be on the original pads but I changed them in the hopes of doing another school. When I changed then they still had 5mm of pad left. Actually I still have the rear pads (8mm of pad left).
On the street, I am very easy on the brakes. I coast up to red lights and smoothly apply the brakes. When I am on the back roads all by myself, I exercise the brakes (hammer the brake pedal when it is time to slow for a turn). I think allowing the brakes to cool is very important to long pad/rotor life.
BUT, brakes are a heck of a lot cheaper than clutch and transmission components.
