The biggest rip-off I have come across is auto upholstery. When I bought my 9kt I had the headliner done (partially because I didn’t have the time to do it, and because I wanted it done right, and lastly I didn’t realize how easy it is to do it yourself). Well their first attempt was a complete failure. When going to pick up the car after they finished I noticed contact glue all over the headliner, seams coming up, not properly glued, on and on. After I bitched they did it again, this time forgetting to put back my sliding sunroof cover. They finally got it right the third time. Which brings me to today. Recently I wanted to redo the parcel shelf and again, felt like it would be better to have some one else do it. Finding another upholstery shop recommended by a friend in Beverly Hills, I took in the shelf and was quoted $70. Reasonable I thought as the fabric I wanted would have cost me roughly $40 anyway. Well, when picking it up today I could not believe what I saw - the worst looking job I have ever seen. I mean real amateurish. After complaining the manager said “well, i only charged you $70.” As if that somehow justifies the outcome. I then, as calm as I could be, picked up my stuff and paid him only for the fabric - $32. He screamed, threatened to sue. I said fine, you have my address. The moral I believe is - do it yourself. The fabric is cheap enough that if you make a mistake you still can redo it cheaper than a shop would charge and there’s less hassle. I think I can fix their mistakes, but in hindsight, wish I would have started the whole process myself. I have finally learned the lesson as I get ready to redo the door panel inserts. Which now makes me wonder how f**ked up they’d be if I took them in. My 2 cents.
