Hi All,
Anyone with experience in getting their car through California (S.F.)
smog test? I just had it pretested only(thank god), and it shows gross polluter.. I am trying to avoid having the shop doing all the trouble shoot and charge me big bucks for this and the repairs. I am going to post the test results below and if any of you have had similar values and know what it took to fix it, I'd appreciate some ideas. The car is a -88 9000Turbo Aut. in pretty much stock cond., with a SPG 9 phase 1 APC box (should be smog OK acc to them when sold).

I used to live in LA and another car (Volvo) failed smog and it showed high "NO" values. A new Cat. converter fixed that. The Northern CA smog test is actually more lenient and doesn't show "NO" readings for some reason..

Here are my readings from today's test:

@2500 rpm
MAX allowed Actual reading
HC 140 135 PASS
CO% 1.00 2.46 FAIL
CO2% 12.9
O2% 0.7

@idle(861 rpm)

HC 120 264 FAIL
CO% 1.00 4.08 FAIL
CO2% 11.8
O2% 0.7

Ignition timing was at 15 BTDC

All other visual and functional inspections PASSED.

Do you think this is cat. converter problem, Oxygen sensor?
I replaced the spark plugs laast week end and noticed the old were pretty black / sutty (dry), which would indicate it runs rich...
The car runs strong and fine overall.

Let me know if you have any ideas before I bring it in to get ripped off at the shop...
Thanks
/Lars
