From everything I've heard over the past five years, replacing the chain every 110,000 km/70,000 miles is a bit excessive. I have heard, that the 2.3l balance shafted engine is somewhat more prone to needing the chain replaced at all, as compared to the 2.0l B202 engine. The only thing I've had done on my '87 is to have the updated chain tensioner put in, at about 170k miles. That quieted it down noticeably
I don't know how it is in Europe, but in the Statees, $1250 every 70,000 miles on a regular maintenance item is huge. It's not uncommon to spend more than that on a yearly basis for maintenance on an older car, but that's on several repairs, not just one.. Some people don't even have their timing belt replaced at every 60k miles like they are supposed to, and that is only a $250 job typically!
