Never understood why you'd revise the intake on a 9000..

Here's a picture of the way my stock intake works, but perhaps the intake setup on my '87 is another oddball among 9000s. The airflow is a straight shot from where it comes in, inside the wheel well, all the way to the turbo (well give or take a few degrees). There already IS a duct between the air filter and the AMM, that's naturally shown in the picture just to the right of the AMM, the big piece of plastic which clips onto the AMM. The air filter in my car is a long cylinder, approximately 5" in diameter and 10-12" long. The end of it in this picture would be near the end of the right side of the plastic piece, in other words, about even with the right side of the retaining clip in the lower right. Thus, it extends 12" or so to the right of that, into the wheel well.
What can be bad about that? I can't imagine how you could make it any better, except to perhaps have some kind of 'ram-air' effect that channels more air into it than will be drawn in naturally.. but with a turbo, I'd guess you don't need that kind of effect.
So did I just get lucky, and all the other intakes are weird?
