Defeated by the AIC...

My '93 CSE suffers from the occasional idle drop when the AC compressor kicks in. I've placed it high on the "things to do" list since, when the revs drop, it nearly stalls and an oscillation in the serpentine belt causes it to come in contact with the head. If you watch it you can see the belt trying to jump off (incidentally, I've already changed the tensioner).
Suspecting the AIC, I disconnected it and manually brought the idle back up to just under 1000 rpm. I figured that this was high enough to absorb the compressor load when it starts - also turns out to be a partial cure for shot motor mount idle vibration..!
Alas, car brain defeated human brain. In unplugging the AIC, the compressor refuses to run..
However, carefully observing what was going on under the hood made me realize that perhaps the AIC is not totally to blame after all. About 50% of the time the compressor starts with no drop in revs (or at least, very little). During the occasions when the revs do drop a lot, I've noticed that the main cooling fan bursts into life briefly at the same time as the compressor and condenser fan. This really is a brief burst - perhaps a quarter of a second.
I figured that this extra load the engine has to contend with is probably causing the AIC to run out of breath. Has anyone else come across the cooling fan doing this? Is there a cure?
Many thanks,
Oliver
