If you don't get warm air then the mixer flap is stuck at cold air side. Do a self test to make sure the stepper motor is healthy. The motor isn't moving the flap because the arm fell off or the arm on the mixer flap broke.
Open the hood and remove the plastic panel below the windshield. At the passenger side of the heater core there is a shaft coming sideways out of the heater core with an arm connected to a stiff wire.
This is the case for early '90.
Some one will confirm for '88.
