Because the output point of the tranny is on the left side of the car, the driveshaft assembly is longer on the right side of the car than the left. This right side drive shaft is made up from two parts: A "stub" axle (or intermediate shaft), which is a hollow tube with an interior spline which fits directly to the output shaft of the tranny, and a driveshaft/cv joint which connects to this stub axle. The point where the stub axle and the driveshaft join is held in alignment with a support which is bolted to the bottom of the engine. This support also contains a bearing.
The height of the support differs by approximatly 3 mm between the manual and auto trannys. The auto tranny support has an "A" cast on the bottom of it which is only visible if you remove the support.
Using the wrong support will cause the stub axle to be held out of alignment meaning it will flex around its axis as it rotates. Failure of the tube by metal fatigue is the usual result at the connection with the tranny.
I broke three before I figured this out with help from others on this board. Hope this helps.
