to check the lower balljoints jack up the wheel so that it is off the ground. Grap it near the front and try to move it in and out. If it has play look behind it to see where it is moving. If you have any movement in the ball joint it should be replaced. I just did mine, they were around $40 a piece and took less than a half hour per side (would have went quicker had i bothered to drag out the air hose and use air tools) Just three bolts on the lower control arm and a pinch bolt in the steering knuckle. You will need a long pry bar to separate the balljoint from the knuckle (before disconnecting it from the control arm). Other than that no special tools are required. BTW jack up both sides when working on it, even if you only need to change one, that way you won't have to fight against the force of the sway bar when pushing down on the lower control arm. Hope this helps.
