Hot!!! hub/wheel

Ok, I'm opening a new thread to attempt to get some insight on what is going on on my wife's right front wheel. See other thread on the wheel noise. I drove about 25 miles at 50 mph, pulled into the drive and felt the wheel. It was hot! Jacked the car up, checked the wheel for side-play- none; removed the wheel (hot bolts), had to hose off the hub and rotor- hissed. We're talking hot here. After things cooled down, got down to business of seeing whats what. Attempting to rotate the rotor by hand was possible albeit that the pads were dragging a bit, so I prised back on the inner to relieve some of the pressure. The rotor spins fine with no obnoxious noises. Noticed some end-play about 2mm in the half-shaft. Also when rocking the rotor back and forth there seems to be some slack in the ring/pinion but I think thats normal. Didn't have time to check the left side for similar plays. So, what gives. The break pads have always rattled to the point of being embarrassing. You think the caliper is hanging up putting constant pressure on the pads, or do I have a dry bearing getting ready to fail? My wife needs to take a road trip soon so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
