The boost readings in the white/grey area are normal if all the vacuum lines are connected. The white area is actually reading vacuum, which will be the case any time you are not using the throttle. It should go to the bottom of this range under decceleration. Full boost just to the end of yellow (or even a little lower) is just fine for a stock '87 9000T.

As for the rpm's dropping at stop lights, that can be caused by a bad turbo bypass valve, so it's good that you have eliminated that possible source. Next things to look at would be cleaning the throttle body butterfly with some air intake cleaner (similar to carb. cleaner), as well as adjusting the decel dashpot and TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).

I had the same problem as you, with RPM's dropping very low when shiften to neutral. In my case, it was fixed by cleaning the throttle body out, but I found out just a couple weeks ago that the decel dashpot wasn't working at all. This device is what determines how long it takes for the engine speed to return to idle when you either put in the clutch or shift to neutral. Saab says it should be 4 seconds, though the shop says most people complain if it's more than 2 seconds (4 seconds is a long time to drop to idle!). Mine's right around 3 seconds, whereas before it was essentially zero.
