Actually, civilian and military GPS units are now equally accurate (assuming equivelance of hardware.) Prior to a few months ago the government employed a system called "selective availability" which brodcast radomized data along with the GPS signal to significantly impare the accuracy of cilivilian units. This is no longer done, so all cilivian models are retroactively much more accurate. I'll agree though that they are not alwasy ultra precise tool. However, I believe that with the demise of selective availability, relatively high speeds, and using tool like averaging over 30 seconds the GPS can show a very accuarte estimate of speed. Would I trust it to tenths of a mph? No. But I think would trust it in determining that my speedometer is roughly 4mph high. My thoughts anyway.
