There is a lot of argument about the reliability of the automatic transmission in the 9000. Here's my take:
In my experience, you should expect 80- 120K miles (130- 200KM) from the transmission. Some last longer, some die sooner. Not all transmissions will break in that range. But if you have to go by the odds, that is a safe bet.
Let us put that in perspective. That is 5-7 years of driving. Cars break - that is a fact of life. You expect to replace things occasionally. The automatic transmission was an extra price option when the car was bought, and think of it as requiring a little more maintenance for the option.
In the US, you can get a quality rebuilt transmission installed for about 2500USD. That works out to about 400USD per year to drive the automatic. Manual transmissions break too - not as often, but they do. And clutches are wear items that aren't free.
If you want an automatic transmission car, buy one. Just budget to replace the transmission at some point. If it never happens, great. If it does happen, deal with it.
If you don't have a preference in transmissions, get the manual. It's stronger, more fuel efficient, and frankly, more fun. But if you want or need an automatic, don't avoid a 9000 just because it will need repairs. The only cars you can buy that doesn't need repairs is the die cast models they sell in the parts department.
The price of used cars varies greatly from place to place. In the US, $9000 would be a very high price for a '91 with the equivalent of 120K miles. But your market may be very different, so I can't say. Either way, I would assume that you need to replace the transmission some time in the next two years, and build that into the price.
Of course, with any used car, I would expect 'unexpected' repairs - blower motor, heater core, maybe a radiator or exhaust system. That is true in any car that has been on the road for 10 years and 5 trips around the world.
Good luck!
