A common problem in the 9000 is the heater core leaking. One sign is the smell of coolant when the heat is turned on. As Sam points out, there was a recall for '92 and some '93 cars, where the leak could damage the airbag module. The recall puts a cover on the airbag control board. IF the heater core is found to be leaking, they will replace the core for free.
If your car is under the recall and it hasn't been done, by all means have it done, and press the dealer for a free heater core.
If the recall was done, or your car doesn't come under it (some '93's didn't), you have a few choices. You can replace the core. Not a cheap job, but like death, taxes, and indigestion, it comes to us all. As a possible solution, try a small container of Bars Leaks in the coolant tank. If that doesn't fix the problem in a couple of weeks, try another small bottle. If two doesn't do the trick, then you probably need a new heater core. But if the leak is small, Bars Leaks quite often will do the trick. There has been much discussion on the board, and there are a few folks that swear by the stuff. It's not your usual snake oil, as many OEM's use it in cooling systems in new cars.
My '92 started to give that 'baked bread' smell, and a bottle of Bars Leaks cleaned it right up. The car has been fine for years (3 and counting) now.
