The real question, Tim, is how capable a mechanic are you? Swapping an engine is a pretty big job, even if you are putting in an identical unit from the same model car. And, as BillJ says, how well do you know the history of the engine you are getting? And does it come with the trans mounted? What condition is the Trans in? The Clutch? Do you want to pull all these things apart or test them first?

Doing a Valve Job on your existing engine might be simpler if you know the Trans and Clutch are good. The reason I say "might" is that you may have also sucked metal through the system which could damage the bottom end. Chances are, this is not likely as the engine probably quit rather quickly, but it's worth draining the oil and pulling the filter and seeing what comes out.

Next, don't be too cheap to buy a manual. The manual won't give you advice like you might get here, but it will give you a solid basis for R & R. Nobody on-line is likely to give you the step-by-step procedures or the torque specs you'll find in a manual. (Not to say that Townsend or Quasi or others like BillJ don't go the extra mile here. How they find the time to do it escapes me!) And the Haynes manual is cheap at $21US; I'll bet none of your parts are that cheap, er inexpensive!

All things considered, my bet would go to rebuilding what you know you've got, unless you can confirm the swap is in good condition. Perhaps you can get a little "heads up" on the swapper engine by sending an oil sample for analysis like they do with airplanes. It tells a lot about the condition of an engine.
