I was the one who suggested that your amp deserved better. Sorry, if that drove you to a new head unit, but I hope you will be better off in the long run.
I have a Clarion 9375 which is a similar model from a couple of years ago. I have been consistently impressed with it. It is a little flashier than I would like.
Since you are switching to RCA's, I recommend spending a few extra dollars on good ones. I used Street Wires cables that were around $40 - $45 for 12 feet (maybe it was 16 feet - can't remember exactly). Anyway, better cables usually mean less noise.
I have a 12 inch jbl sub in a box. I have 2 channels on a 4x75 amp bridged to drive the sub and it's plenty loud. The amp also has an 18 db bass boost at 50 hz which adds some additional vibration. The big problem that I have is a lack of mid-bass. The sub provides plenty of low bass, but in my car (which is a cd model with the enclosed trunk) the mid-bass tones are not making it to the driver's seat. I think that in a hatchback more of the higher range of sub would make to the front.
I have thought about a custom install of a 5.25 or 6.5 component set in the front, but I don't see a way to make an enclosure for the woofer that is going to produce any real bass.
I'd be interested in hearing any mid-bass solutions devised by other people.
