Split CV boot - what to replace?

I noticed tonight when changing the serpentine belt on my 88 9kT that the CV boot on the passenger side CV joint (Outer) had split seriously - there was grease everywhere. I figured the quantity of grease is actually a good sign - i.e. it is a recent thing so there might not be too much dirt etc. inside the joint itself.
My question, though, is - should I just replace the boot, the boot and the CV joint, or the whole driveshaft? The whole driveshaft is no doubt the simplest and i'm kind of leaning that way - the car has 148k miles on it and hasn't had anything down there replaced in at least the 36,000 miles I've owned the car.
Anyone had any experience - successes/failures?
