Raleigh,

I had the same feeling as you...wanted turbo power but didn't want to scrap my 91 9k S model. As the exhaust was already rusted on the car, I replaced it with sport system. I bought a Saber from Accelerated Response in Toronto. Also, I installed a free-flow catalytic converter. Then I added a K&N filter. Feeling like I still wanted more I looked for a chip. Most of the chip makers in the U.S. only make chips for the turbo...and with good reason. A chip for the turbo can have a significant impact. The impact for our cars is less significant. I finally located a chip maker in Australia called Powerchip. (http://www.powerchip.com.au/index.asp) They make a chip for our car. I installed it myself...not too difficult. Including postage and calls to Australia, the chip ended up costing close to $600.

I can say that my car is quicker but how much quicker is hard to tell. Is it as fast as a turbo...probably not. I can make the car pretty quick, but I really need to work the gears. My friends in the turbos just step on the gas. My car just doesn't have the "whooosh" feeling I associate with the turbo.

One other issue may be relevent...the chip maker told me that the chip would have a bigger impact because of the exhaust and filter change. However, I have no way of verifying this as I already had the exhaust on the car when I bought the chip.

The question you have to ask yourself is, "Once I spend over $1,000 on all this stuff, will I be satisfied?" The answer for me is...I had fun doing it and the car is definatly different than the run of the mill nonturbo. It is better than it was, but no where close to the 9K Aero that I eventually want to buy.

If I really want to go crazy...I might spend another $1,500 getting the head flowed. Good, clean, stupid fun.

Cheers,
Craig Caldwell
