I decided to try charging the a/c myself. I bought a kit with a hose, a tap for refrigerant cans, a gauge, and a high side adapter.
The way the kit works is that you tap the can and then screw it on to the hose, which has a fitting at the end which attaches to the low side schrader valve. You fill through the low side, then turn off the can, disconnect the can and attach the guage. The low side fitting has an adapter to fit on the high side valve so you can measure the high side pressure also.
Filling went very well after I discovered that can must be upside down. I checked low side pressure and it looked good. I attached high side adapter to fitting at end of hose and went to attach the hose to the high side valve(with the gauge attached at the other end of the hose).
The high side valve exploded. Boiling vapor spewed out of the high side valve. I mananged to attach the hose to the valve which stopped the gas flow. However, if I try to detach the hose from the valve, the valve spews 134a. It seems like there is something wrong with the valve, which may be how I lost the 134a to begin with.
Anyone know how these valves work? I have seen an a/c mechanic use some kind of wrench on these valves before, but I am not sure what was happening. The high side pressure is dissipating. will I be able to remove the hose in the morning? Can I change the schrader valve without discharging the whole system? Anyone still up? Anyone else do this stuff in the middle of the night?
