To say that R-134A does the same kind of damage to the environment as R-12 is pure horseshit. Weasel words like "on a smaller scale" tell me you are fully aware that you are spreading a pack of lies. R-134 was pushed through as a replacement for R-12 because it is virtually a non-ozone-depleter. It has cost the chemical industry, the automotive sevice industry, and individual car owners a ton of money and headaches in return for two things 1) it is much less of an ozone depleter than R-12 (virtually zero) and 2) it can be retrofitted into R-12 systems satisfactorily.
Robert, you can be assured that accidents like yours, while not completely harmless, are a far cry from the damage that would have been done had your system contained an R-12 charge. Kudos to you for converting to R-134! Hopefully you complied with the federal regulations that requires evacuating and recycling the R-12 that was formerly in your system.
I am tired of seeing misinformation like nick's post spread around. There are sources of accurate information out there if you are interested in learning, one is epatest.com
