Cap'n,

These days, I usually jack the car by the front or rear jacking points, as per the Haynes manual, lifting both sides at once. My axle stands only just fit under the factory jacking points when I do this. I am considering buying shorter stands. However, I have used the front subframe point you describe many times without any problem. It seems to me that this point is designed to take the weight of the front corner of the car. At the rear of the car, I often jack up under the trailing arm, just where it joins the subframe. Again, it seems to me that this point is designed to take the weight of the rear corner. I have never considered jacking further along under the trailing arm.
