Saab has a long and honorable history of putting gee-whiz gauges and meters on their vehicles. Long ago when the world was young, there was a thing called the Halda Speedpilot that appeared on 3-cyclinder Monte Carloes; it worked, but trying to figure whether the data indicated related to any part of otherwise universal reality was like crossing the Pacific by dead reckoning...Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency had nothing on the Halda.

Since those days, I've lived with five different generations of Saabs. All had a lot going for them, but calibration of instruments has never been among virtues noted.

The EDU is fun. It is even helpful, e.g. for knowing whether the alternator is producing juice. But I wouldn't bet ten cents on its accuracy on anything like fuel consumption. My 91 9kT, per the EDU, consistently gets 51 or 52 mpg. Hey, at $2/gal, I should be smiling! Reality in gas milage is achieved by using the same pump regularly, checking each fill against the odometer, keeping a running record. I carry a little throw-away calculator in my car; usually it tells me some number between 21 and 24, depending. I, too, drive moderately, although I will put my foot into it a couple of times per tankful. I'd like 30 mpg, but I doubt it will ever occur.
