My EDU is about right on. (Although the sceptical inquirer will question BOTH the EDU and the odometer...)
One point I've noticed: the old carburettor-strategy of low-rev, large throttle openings does not work with fuel-injected cars. I wondered why my 86 900S never got great mileage, and in fact my old 78 EMS didn't do as well as my 73 99.
The answer might be (BEGIN SPECULATION>>> that fuel injection and APC moderated boost will suck your gas down at heavy-foot whether at 2k RPMs or at 5.5k. Naturally, at high revs, it'll suck a LOT more gas, but foer the EDU's purpose, and your total MPGs, it is better to drive at light throttle than at low revs.
The converse seems to be also true: at light throttle, the APC/L-Jetronic can probably darn near turn the fuel OFF, or at least run the injectors' duty cycle to near 0%. This means that lightly loaded, the engine will use darn near 0 "extra" fuel. Ok, ok, that's extreme, but I've found that "driving the EDU" has brought my economy from 16-18mpg up to 24, and that includes rediscovering the lost art of downshifting, at least in moderation. <<<END SPECULATION)
The accuracy of the EDU seems pretty reliable, as the device is not SAABs but Bosche's, and if one doubts their abilities, one might want to avoid European market cars. Sure, even Bosch can blow it, but there's not much to calibrate here, so large errors may be a hint of large problems.
Just one person's opinion. (Insert "Dennis Miller disclaimer" here.)
