The 55's are only about 3% taller than the 50's you removed (when new), so the fact that you are effectively "geared up" that might be part of the sensation. Keep in mind that you now have more rubber, thus there is more resistence to the power delivery--and whereas you might've had 2/32" of tread before, you likely now have around 9/32", which is gearing you up even more.
You started with perhaps 23.6" of rolling diameter, figured like this:
Old tires rolling diameter when new with 9/32" tread depth: 24.07
Old tires rolling diameter with 2/32" tread depth: 24.07-(.44*)=23.63
*7/32" depth less than new with 2 tread surfaces in diameter: 14/32=.44"
New tires rolling diameter with 9/32" tread: 24.87"
Difference: 24.87 / 23.6 = 1.0538
That's about 5% of additional tire height, which may well be enough to feel. It is also enough to alter your speedometer that percentage.
