I had a very similar problem with my car about 4 months ago... like everyone else, a full tank was a fine reading, but as it got used, maybe to halfway or so, the needle would just drop, and correspondingly, the range would fall quickly. Sometimes the needle would come back up for a minute or two... then it would fall.
Some time later, I took it to my usual mech at that time (general euro mech) they took out the fuel sender, and said they couldn't really test it other than at full or empty-- not between. They said a new part would be something like $170 or $270... something insane. My cash flow as it is (or isn't), I said "how much to just put it back in?" They charged 50 bucks for taking it out and putting it back... and damned if it hasn't worked perfectly since. This isn't the first time my car has done this (another time with the cruise control it 'fixed itself'). Maybe something holding it weird got shaken loose by the removal and refit. I liken it to jiggling the handle on a toilet. :)
