A/C, expansion valve question

Picked up my '92 9k today at the dealer after getting a new fuel pump, and the A/C would not cool. They looked at it for me and said the expansion valve was sticking. They recommended I spring for the kit to change from R-12 to the new type coolant(is it R-134), while the system was apart for the new expansion valve. Total quote for kit and new expansion valve about $1000. That is a lot for me right now, as I just paid $700 to have the fuel pump put in.
How can I save some money here? Is there any part of this job DIY? I know I can't service the coolantm but could I have a local(non Saab knowledgeable) shop pump out the coolant, then I put the expansion valve in? Do I really need to switch to the new coolant? Is the new coolant as effective? Any other thoughts will be appreciated.
Thanks
