It could be the DI if your car is DI equipped (You don't mention what year you have, or engine -2.0, 2.3, turbo, two-stroke..), but it could also be the AMM or O2 sensor. Quite often an AMM problem shows up as a hesitation at lower RPM and small throttle openings, like when you're moderately accelerating away from a stop. When you mash the throttle open, a switch is tripped and the Engine Control schedules a lot more fuel. I'll bet that if you pull the spark plugs, you're running on the lean side. That would also make the car more prone to knock and a feeling of misfiring.
Pull the plugs and look. Then check for vacuum leaks - I've never see a car without at least one. It's possible that the AMM is going bad (if your car is AMM equipped), or that is just needs adjustment (if your year has the adjustable AMM). If the O2 sensor is getting old, the response slows down, and that can cause hesistation.
