For air leaks, start with every air hose you can find. Inspect all the hoses for cracks, especially where they meet a fitting. If you see cracks, replace the hose (vacuum hose is cheap). Also look for splits along the length of hoses. And don't forget just plain fallen off hoses - there aren't many vacuum hoses connected only at one end.
Next, check the four short, fat hoses from the intake plenum to the intake manifold. Make sure the clamps are tight, and that the hoses aren't shot. An air leak there will Kill you.
Next, if you have a turbo engine, find the Hooter valve - it's a black plastic cylinder about 2 inches in diameter with two fatter hoses and one thin hose, going to the throttle area. Pull the thin hose off the throttle, and suck on it. You shouldn't be able to pull any air through. If you can, then the diaphram in the hooter valve is shot and the valve needs replacement.
My favorite leak site is the charcoal canister.
